Porter à l'écran Le Festin nu, le chef d'œuvre mythique et sulfureux de William Burroughs, tenait de la gageure. C'est pourtant la prouesse réalisée en 1991 par David Cronenberg, le réalisateur de La Mouche et de Faux-semblants. On retrouve ici William Lee en cavale à Interzone, étrange mélange de Tanger et de New York, où il est engagé comme agent secret par une machine à écrire fort loquace qui se métamorphose volontiers en cafard... Comme Burroughs, Lee tue sa femme avec le " coup de Guillaume Tell " et plutôt deux fois qu'une. Comme Burroughs, Lee enquête sur la drogue, il est sauvé par un ou deux amis américains et il travaille à un roman qui deviendra... Le Festin nu. Cette adaptation remarquable de fidélité et de liberté témoigne d'une complicité rare entre un écrivain et un cinéaste.
