Book Presentation:
Fuller nous invite à suivre son itinéraire de journaliste dans les années 1930, soldat de la fameuse unité "Big Red One", et cinéaste-scénariste-producteur à Hollywood.
Samuel Fuller raconte l’Amérique ; me journalisme, la guerre, le cinéma. Né en 1912, son itinéraire croise ces trois fondements du vingtième siècle américain. Jeune journaliste dans l’entre-deux-guerres, il est témoin de la montée des grands empires de presse (Pulitzer, Hearst, Brisbane).Mobilisé en 1942 dans la fameuse « Big Red One », il « débarque » trois fois, en Afrique du nord, en Italie, et en Normandie.
Années 50, Hollywood, sa triple activité de scénariste-dialoguiste, producteur et metteur en scène lui confère le statut d’auteur indépendant, au cœur du système des studios. Il réalise alors de nombreux films à grand succès, western, thrillers, films sur la presse (I Shot Jesse James, Forty Guns, Pick up on South Street, The Naked Kiss, Park Row), et particulièrement des films sur la guerre (The Steel Helmet, Fixed Bayonets !, Verboten !) d’un point de vue totalement original par rapport à l’atmosphère hollywoodienne de la guerre froide.
