C'est en 1992, avec Impitoyable et son Oscar, qu'Eastwood conquiert véritablement son statut d'auteur de cinéma. Aujourd'hui, Eastwood est considéré comme le dernier grand classique du cinéma américain. Et pourtant, à suivre l'ensemble de son parcours, il apparaît qu'il a toujours su jouer avec son image, par la dérision ou la déglingue. L'Ange exterminateur était déjà un hors-la-loi romantique et libertaire. Clint Eastwood-cinéaste excelle dans l'art de la décomposition, ses paraboles véristes sont teintées d'une infinie mélancolie et les rôles qu'il se donne vieillissent à son rythme. Héritier des meilleures figures du cinéma de genre, il hante, tel un fantôme, un monde où la toute puissance du mal ne parvient jamais à tarir la source de l'utopie. Ses thématiques récurrentes et le réalisme lyrique de son style font de lui un passeur essentiel entre les grands maîtres fondateurs (Ford, Hawks, Walsh) et le meilleur du cinéma moderne
