Depuis la sortie du Septième Sceau et des Fraises sauvages, Ingmar Bergman fut l'une des figures de proue du cinéma international. En 60 ans de carrière, il a écrit, produit et réalisé 50 films, dont Persona, Scènes de la vie conjugale ou Fanny et Alexandre, qui révèlent comment on se perçoit et comment on se comporte avec ceux que l'on aime. Avant sa mort, en 2007, Bergman avait accordé aux co-éditeurs TASCHEN et Max Ström un accès illimité à ses archives de la Fondation Bergman, ainsi que l'autorisation de rééditer ses écrits et interviews, dont beaucoup n'avaient jamais été diffusés hors de Suède. L'iconographe Bengt Wanselius, photographe de plateau de Bergman pendant 20 ans, a exploré des archives photographiques dans toute la Suède, découvert des images encore inconnues des films du réalisateur, sélectionné des clichés inédits tirés des archives personnelles de nombreux photographes. Cette réédition remet en avant Les Archives Ingmar Bergman, ouvrage le plus complet jamais paru sur le cinéaste, aujourd'hui épuisé. Pour ce projet déjà récompensé, Paul Duncan, éditeur chez TASCHEN, a rassemblé toute une équipe de spécialistes de Bergman pour collaborer à l'ouvrage. De leurs recherches est né un récit proposant, pour la première fois, une synthèse de l'œuvre cinématographique de Bergman. La profondeur des écrits de Bergman est telle que la plus grande partie de l'histoire est racontée avec ses propres mots. Cet ouvrage offre également une introduction écrite par Erland Josephson, grand ami de Bergman, dont il fut aussi l'acteur et le collaborateur. Le 24 novembre 2008, les archives Ingmar Bergman et les éditeurs Paul Duncan et Bengt Wanselius se sont vu décerner le prix August 2008 du meilleur essai publié en Suède, récompense littéraire la plus prestigieuse en Suède, attribué par un jury de libraires et de bibliothécaires issus de tout le pays.
