Sensuel et subversif, coloré et controversé, passionné et provocateur, le monde de Pedro Almodovar tranche parmi ceux des autres réalisateurs actuels. De par son , remarquablement cohérente et conséquente, le Castillan rebelle est devenu une valeur sûre du Septième art, son nom est synonyme de l'opulence visuelle, du caractère expérimental et de l'érotisme qui font la marque du cinéma espagnol postfranquiste.
Almodovar a connu la gloire comme auteur et réalisateur d'intrigues mariant les genres pour narrer les mésaventures souvent comiques de drogués, de nonnes, de femmes au foyer, de prostitué(e)s, de travestis et de transsexuels. Encensé par la critique, admiré de ses pairs réalisateurs, adoré des acteurs et récompensé par une multitude de prix internationaux, il est le réalisateur espagnol le plus célèbre depuis Luis Buñuel, grâce à des films comme Femmes au bord de la crise de nerfs, Tout sur ma mère, Parle avec elle et Volver.
Auteur autodidacte, Almodovar se nourrit d'influences aussi diverses que Douglas Sirk, Frank Tashlin, Andy Warhol ou John Waters. Ses films s'inspirent librement des genres traditionnels du cinéma classique américain notamment du film noir, du mélo ou de la comédie déjantée souvent, d'ailleurs, pour les pervertir. Ils demeurent cependant profondément ibériques ; enracinés dans Madrid, la ville tant aimée du réalisateur, ils explorent les mythes et la modernité espagnols au rythme de bandes originales aux accents de boléro. Ces dernières années, l'enfant terrible du cinéma d'art et d'essai des années 1980 s'est mué en réalisateur oscarisé avec Tout sur ma mère, un film universellement salué pour sa résonnance émotionnelle, sa sophistication et sa maîtrise technique. Le monde si particulier d'Almodovar, un temps marginal, s'épanouit aujourd'hui dans le courant dominant.
