L'ouvrage a été réalisé grâce à ses archives personnelles. Le cinéma peut s'estimer heureux. Il a eu la chance de détourner Orson Welles et Marcel Pagnol du théâtre, Pasolini et Cocteau de la poésie et Kubrick des échecs. Le fait que Buñuel, l'un des plus talentueux surréalistes, ait choisi de faire des films est aussi une chance. Ses films, tournés à Hollywood, en France ou au Mexique, ont ceci de particulier qu'ils abordent des sujets dont on ne parlait pas dans la haute société à savoir le sexe, la religion et la politique.
