Avec la sortie du Septième sceau et des Fraises sauvages en 1957, Ingmar Bergman est devenu l’une des figures de proue du cinéma international, au même titre que d’autres grands cinéastes comme Federico Fellini ou Akira Kurosawa. En soixante ans de carrière, il a écrit, produit et réalisé 50 films, dont Persona, Scènes de la vie conjugale, ou Fanny et Alexandre, qui révèlent comment on se perçoit et comment on se comporte avec ceux que l’on aime.
Avant sa mort, en 2007, Bergman avait accordé aux co-éditeurs TASCHEN et Max Ström un accès illimité à ses archives de la Fondation Bergman, ainsi que l’autorisation de rééditer ses écrits et interviews, dont beaucoup n’avaient jamais été diffusés hors de Suède. Bengt Wanselius, photographe de plateau de Bergman pendant 20 ans, s’est chargé des recherches iconographiques: il a exploré des archives photographiques dans toute la Suède, découvert des images encore inconnues des films du réalisateur, sélectionné des clichés inédits tirés des archives personnelles de nombreux photographes. L’éditeur Paul Duncan a quant à lui rassemblé toute une équipe de spécialistes de Bergman pour collaborer à l’ouvrage: Peter Cowie et Bengt Forslund (pour le cinéma et la télévision), Ulla Åberg et Birgitta Steene (pour le théâtre). De leurs recherches est né un récit qui propose, pour la première fois, une synthèse du travail de Bergman, au cinéma comme au théâtre. La profondeur des écrits de Bergman est telle que la plus grande partie de l’histoire est racontée avec ses propres mots. Cet ouvrage propose également une nouvelle introduction écrite par Erland Josephson, un grand ami de Bergman, dont il a aussi été l’acteur et le collaborateur, mais aussi un DVD contenant de nombreux documents exceptionnels et inédits, ainsi qu’un morceau de pellicule de Fanny et Alexandre.
Les éditeurs ont également pu accéder à l’intégralité des documents et archives de l’Institut Suédois du Film, de la Svensk Filmindustri, de la Sveriges Television et du Théâtre Dramatique Royal, ainsi qu’à ceux de nombreuses autres institutions, éditeurs et journaux, ce qui vaut à ce livre d’être l’ouvrage le plus complet jamais publié sur Ingmar Bergman.
