En 1999, son créateur George Lucas décidait de raconter l'enfance d'Anakin Skywalker, comment il suivit l'enseignement d'Obi-Wan Kenobi pour devenir un Jedi, comment il découvrit l'amour auprès de la reine de Naboo, Padmé Amidala, puis bascula du côté obscur de sa nature, devenant plus machine qu'homme. Force motrice du développement de techniques numériques naissantes, George Lucas savait qu'avec ces outils il pourrait créer de nouvelles créatures et de nouveaux mondes à une échelle jusqu'alors impossible. C'est ainsi qu'il conçut le premier blockbuster numérique et rencontra une résistance farouche quand il milita pour la généralisation des caméras, des décors, des personnages et des projecteurs numériques, que l'industrie cinématographique emploie aujourd'hui largement. Une façon moderne de faire des films popularisée par Lucas. Réalisé avec l'entière collaboration de George Lucas et de Lucasfilm, ce deuxième volume dévoile la fabrication de la prélogie - les Episodes I (La Menace fantôme), II (L'Attaque des clones) et III (La Revanche des Sith) - à travers notamment un entretien exclusif avec Lucas.
